As a first-generation law school student, I was initially concerned about navigating law school and connecting with individuals with similar backgrounds and experiences. Over the course of the last several months, however, I have had the opportunity to be mentored by incredible judges and attorneys with similar lived experiences and to connect with other first-generation law school students as part of the OneElevate Leadership Program at Vanderbilt University Law School. OneElevate selects ten students from the incoming JD class who are first-generation or underrepresented for a year-long leadership development program. Throughout the last two semesters, OneElevate has not only allowed me to hone my leadership and professional development skills, it has also allowed me to meet some amazing students here at Vanderbilt.

Last night, my peers in OneElevate and I celebrated our completion of the program and our growth throughout the last two semesters. As I reflect on my experience, I am grateful to have had this opportunity and I look forward to serving as a mentor for the students in next year’s cohort!

Lastly, I would like to thank Dean Meyers and Michelle Kovash, who poured into each of us and always answered our questions and assisted us with accessing resources at the law school. Without them, this experience would not have been possible.
