Last Friday was my last day as a law clerk for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee. As someone who wishes to pursue a career in civil rights, working on Capitol Hill during such a pivotal time was both challenging and rewarding. I had the chance to bear witness to historic events like the re-introduction of H.R. 40, a bill to study reparations proposals for the descendants of enslaved Africans. I also staffed several confirmation hearings for executive branch nominees. As a first-generation law school student, it is not lost on me that opportunities like this have rarely been extended to folks like me. I am deeply grateful to Senator Coons’ staff for making this experience possible and for the support I received from staff and students at Vanderbilt University Law School.
