Black History Month at Vanderbilt Law School

This year, I had the honor of working alongside my friend and colleague, Alexis Shaw, to plan and lead the Vanderbilt Black Law Students Association’s Black History Month programming.

This year’s programming was especially meaningful as we commemorated the 70th anniversary of the desegregation of Vanderbilt University Law School.

Throughout our month-long celebration in February, it was deeply moving to hear from trailblazers like Judge Waverly Crenshaw (VLS ‘81) and Mr. Al Dotson, Jr. (VLS ‘87), who shared their experiences as Black law students during the first decades of integration at the law school. Their reflections offered powerful reminders of the resilience, courage, and determination that helped pave the way for future generations.

We were also privileged to welcome former U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke and Tennessee State Representative Justin Pearson—two dedicated public servants whose commitment to justice continues to inspire. Their words encouraged us to carry forward the mantle of leadership and advocacy, particularly during this challenging moment in our nation’s history.

Thank you to Alexis, BLSA’s Black History Month Chair, the Vanderbilt BLSA Executive Board, and the law school staff who helped make this year’s commemoration such a success!
